He got way bigger than that actually. In fact he was so big that the director (Chris Nolan) told him he had to tone down a little.

They're referring to his weight loss for the role in The Machinist. He went from normal to that unhealthy looking thing in the right pic just for that role.

I think they mean how actresses go on diets all the time to look good for a movie ? Because that's all they get asked about when honestly I don't see a difference ?

And as it turned out, the director didn't want Professor X to be bald at the age he was supposed to be in the movie, so McAvoy ended up wearing a hair piece and it was all for nothing.
