I'm American, but I use the English spelling of quite a few things, which my family finds really weird because they all write the normal "American" way.

In Australia, apparently we're supposed to spell "jail" as "gaol", but everyone I know uses the American version

Not common sense. Common sense is more like: don't hit people, it's bad. This is just knowledge. Nothing to do with what YOU think (common sense), it's just a grammatic rule.
