Well, like, obviously they would only let people travel to another planet if they knew enough about their own ? How stupid would you feel if you met a curious species and didn't know shit ?
We know a lot about countries today, but if we were to encounter an alien species we would know nothing about them. We haven't had the time to study them or write about them as we have with others on this planet.
So it would make sense for them to know all about their home world if they were to venture out to exchange info with other unknown worlds.
We wouldn't send a 4th grader on a space mission to tell aliens about us when half of them think the sun isn't a star.
And also, besides a passport, it would be nice if you knew at least a bit of the language of the country you were going to. They shouldn't have to cater to you because you decided to show up uninvited.
I'm writing a story like this, except backwards. A girl from Austin, Tx ends up on another planet and scientists who Study earth ask her for all the Intel she has but she's just a normal fifteen year old girl who gets mostly C's and wastes her time laughing at memes

"It's convenient to the story."
