What are we satirizing here? The fact that people brandish offensive symbols in inappropriate places because they want to make a bold political statement about how they're not actually supporting the offending party but how it somehow magically means something else?
The war wasn't about the slaves, it was political differences, and economics, and punching a dude in the face doesn't make me a traitor, I don't support the south I'm just being Devils advocate
The civil war began as a war for state's rights. When European countries wanted to assist the South in defeating the North, Lincoln pointed out slavery, turning the European aid his way. It was a bit of a dick move, but it was the right one for Lincoln to win the war.
The whole "states rights" thing is a misnomer apologists trot out to dismiss the fact that what the South really wanted was more slave states and the North didn't.
Well I live in Florida. Shit just hit the fan down here b/c Wal-Mart just took the confederate flag off it's shelves and they're talking about taking it off the General Lee. Im just sitting back with popcorn b/c watching people spew their own spin on history is as close a Presidential shit storm as Im gonna get for another year.
Fun fact from a Georgia boy (who happens to not b a racist I might add) that flag isn't even the real confederate flag! It's the battle flag that Lee's army carried into battle. Since the war of northern aggression (as we call it below the Mason-Dixon) the flag has been taken on by groups like the KKK to symbolize a fight that came AFTER the south lost. Another fun fact, the Schwastica actually originated as a Buddhist symbol (maybe Hindu idk). But now days, people don't see it and say "Buddah!" They see it and say "NAZI!" Same with the confederate flag. Since the flag has become so offensive to some people, it may be time to visit the issue and investigate why it is flown. South Carolina happens to be the state where the whole conflict turned into war, so for them to fly the flag isn't that crazy from a historical POV. I say they take down the flag that has come to mean racist, an replace it with the real states rights flag, the stars and bars
On the swastika one there, yeah it was used by many civilisations for centuries (I can give you a link if you want). The Hindus did use it too to confirm your thoughts there and it was used as a sign of peace, prosperity and good fortune. The Nazis took it on because they thought it was a good visual that displayed the movement of the Aryan people (although obviously the Nazi swastika was a simplified form of it)
So, in summary, it is a symbol that holds different meanings for different people, just like some words! Your group of friends my have no problem with cussing, but that doesn't mean that you're gonna go and swear infront of your grandma
They want to remove it from out front of the capital building in SC. Taking it down wouldn't be unconstitutional, what would be unconstitutional is if te Federal Government came in and said, "no one is allowed to fly this flag anywhere" like what they do in Germany with the schwastica
Yea they're never gonna tell people they cant fly it on their own. Especially down here. Hell there's a 50 foot one flyng over the interstate. People complain but it's on private property.
HAHA! Yes! I've seen that in South Georgia! I actually drove past that a couple months ago and just kinda blinked twice like, "wow, South Georgia and Atlanta might as well be different states."
Actually that might have been where it was... I mean, how many 50 foot rebel flags do you think there are? It's much more likely that at any given moment I have no idea what state I'm driving through. We were on our way to Florida when I fell asleep in shotgun tho...
People who fly Confederate flags usually don't realize that it represents a state that rebelled and fought a war against the USA. So I usually see people who fly one as ignorant as opposed to racist.
They didn't fight against the USA, the country was dived, they USA fought itself. There is a common misconception that the union was the good guys when in reality there wasn't a winner, there was only loss of life to prove points
See, if you asked someone from Georgia back then what country they were in and why country they were at war with, they would have said, we are in the CSA, we are fighting the USA. It was a rebellion, but who was the correct side in this conflict doesn't matter. At the end of it all, over 600,000 American men lay dead because Honest Abe was too stubborn to give Fort Sumpter over to the new Confederacy.
I do believe that of the south HAD won, slavery would have died out fairly quickly and much more peacefully, as it did in England. For the south to be recognized as a civilized nation by the power players of the day in Europe, that evil institution would have been removed.

Its just this is one thing the media could sink their teeth into which will be popular for about 2 weeks maybe and then another topic will come out and people will forget about this. If dylann roof was wearing a guy Fawkes mask they would be tying to ban wearing them altogether. Its just fox and CNN they are desperate for a story.
I'm talking about the "confederate" flag that is rectangular instead of square and features just the canton of the real flags used by the government of the Confederate States of America. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
And actually, the constitution says, "unalienable rights, endowed on them by their Creator" (yes, capital C) so you do not forfeit your rights when you riot, heck, technically you don't lose them when you go to jail for murder, you are considered a threat to other people's right to life or property, so your rights that make you dangerous are taken away
And actually, I'd love to fly the Stars and Bars, but they aren't as popular, and therefore, harder to find cheep. Oh and also I don't have a flag pole...
Actually I take that back, depending on what part of the city. He does it in the predominantly white area, nothing happens. He does it in another area (hint hint) tomorrow's headlines read, "DEAD DUMBASS: crazy Caucasian had it comming"
I'm confused as to how that supports your argument... Was this even an argument? Are we arguing? I'm so confused, I just read that post about te guy who was is own grandfather as now my brain hurts...
In all truth I didn't see the last part of you're comment. Either I'm having a stroke or was just in a hurry to comment while watching Jon Stewart..I smell toast burning...
I'm just saying that a large group of people waving Confederate flags in the streets of any city in this country is dangerous and should probably be at least monitored by law enforcement.
I also think that that flag stands for much more than racism, as it is an emblem, accurate or not, of a state that fought a war against the United States of America.
I am not saying that it should be outlawed. As long as it's on private property and not there to start a riot, it's protected by the 1st Amendment. Not saying I agree with what it stands for, but you do you.
I just think that people should be educated on what that flag means more than anything. The modern, rectangular flag was adapted from historically accurate versions solely to promote hatred. The historically accurate ones stand for an enemy of the United States.
*clears throat and stacks papers* and now for my rebuttal. When, in this millennia have we seen a riot from a bunch of people with the Rebel Flag? What we HAVE seen is a riot (or five) with the symbol of punks like Treyvon Martin and Mike Brown. When there is a large group of people walking through the streets waving that flag, it's usually in a parade, an event most often highly populated by police. You say the flag stands for much more than racism, I would say that, as a controversial symbol, it means very different things to different people. It doesn't matter the color of your skin, it matters how you were raised. There is a black man (his name slips my mind) that parades around the country and goes on speaking tours about why he supports the Confederate Flag. Turns out, after research, he flies the flag as a symbol of rebellion against the government. The historically accurate version is still a symbol that means different things to different people.
I would venture that over 75% of people do not know what the true flag of the south looks like, and if you were to ask them what it was, they wouldn't know. To me, the flag calls to mind the fight for states rights that I believe Mr. Lincoln's War was. States rights trump most federal legislation (as we see in Washington and Colorado with recent legalization of Marijuana)
I have never known anyone to fly a square one, one with the "Stars and Bars" in the canton with a white field, or a Bonnie Blue. Those are historically accurate. The rectangular one we know today is a fairly recent creation that had nothing to do with the Confederate States of America. If we are going to consider it a symbol of the South's Civil War history, then we have to attach rebellion from the United States of America with that.
And the riots over the deaths of Treyvon Martin and Mike Brown have absolutely nothing to do with the flag. I never said they were warranted or justifiable. Racism goes both ways, and saying that flying a Confederate flag is wrong in no way justifies racism in the other direction.
True on your racism bit, but actually the flag they want to remove from SC is in fact a square, but I see where you are comming from with the rectangle one being racist
It also has white fringe. It in my mind it has nothing to do with racism or slavery, but the fact that the government of South Carolina still flies a flag that is a historically accurate symbol of a rebellion against the USA. That's why it should be taken down.
The nazis don't even compare to the confederate flag.
This needs to be killed with fire. NOW.
The confederate flag is a part of the permanent history and making of the United States.
The civil war that made America who it is. And braought everything together
The nazis invaded Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Denmark, Yugoslavia, Greece, Norway and parts of Czech. They killed SIX MILLION innocent Jews, and on top of that OVER 14 MILLION allied forces.
So what in the name of good fuck....
Kindly explain to me how the nazi swastika even remotely compares to the confederate flag? Please do elaborate.

I think I just reread the line "what in the name of good fuck" about 30 times
wait the confederate flag is part of that what america made who it is why should we not accept that the flag of germany(1933-1945) is in the same league like the confederate flag? both are historical symbols for nations which not exist anymore. both are part of history. but okay the usa are a little bit different about symbols. for example the swastika(nazi) and a hole other bunch of symbols from the 3rd reich are illegal in germany but in the usa you can show up every day, everywhere with a nazi-symbols, the old fashion uniforms from SA, the hugo boss troops ... and no one can do something. so how does it come that you deny the comparing of the flag of germany(1933-1945) with the confederate flag? when they were so evil why not banning the symbols and so on?
I think we should all respect our nation's history and heritage. People need to learn the truth about the REAL Confederate flag and what they fought for. It was for slavery guys. Learn the truth not the liberal crP they feed you.
It's not because it wasn't. Lincoln declared it to be about slavery to keep Europe from helping the south, but ultimately slavery was just a subplot in the long run of the civil war
But I'd like to hear why people disagree. What makes you think slavery had anything to do with the origins of the ACW? Rights to have slaves may have played a part, but that can be lumped into a war for state rights.

Like I don't understand how you could not see the war as being mostly about the issue of slavery. The seven states that formed the early confederacy were all states that relied heavily on cotton production using slave labor. They formed the Confederacy after Lincoln and the early Republican party were sworn into office on a platform of limiting expansion of slavery to Western Territories. You can try and chalk this all up to some high minded ideal of the rights of the state vs. those of the federal government, but the simple hard economic fact is that the South needed slavery to continue to make money.
States rights wasn't directly tied into slavery, like I said earlier, the civil war was more over difference in Economics

But nearly every issue they claimed was a states right, was directly related to slavery. The economics is tied directly into slavery. The North was mostly industrial but couldn't necessarily compete with other more developed countries. so they favored tariffs on imported goods. While the South was able to compete with low cost slave labor and therefor wanted free trade. Point in fact a majority of the states who seceded listed the States right to own slaves as their main reason for seceding.
Correct I wish more people knew these things instead of seeing the South as being cold hearted slave beaters and the North as kind gentle people to blacks

Granted the North was not equality for all, but they were free states and the South insisted on clinging to the brutal subjugation of an entire race of people for the purpose of producing cheap cotton.
The Confederates just wanted to leave the Union.
General Lee and the Confed Prez even expected slavery to die off on it's own.
I also think that that flag stands for much more than racism, as it is an emblem, accurate or not, of a state that fought a war against the United States of America.
