I don't care if gays can marry, I'm not gay that's not my life. Why was it made such a big deal is what I want to know? As long as you're spending your life with the person you love, why does it matter if you have an official married title?
There are a lot of benefits that come with marriage, which is why most couples (/most/, not all) eventually decide to get married. See 'cookiecorners' comments above for reference.
