In my opinion it's all paternal (or maternal, dunno if there were any lionesses as well) instinct. The lions saw that the girl is not a grown member of its species (in other words a child, or a "cub"), that she is crying for help and in fear, and that she is being seriously threatened by a member of its own species, so they helped. Less evolved animals would not be capable of such an act, but most mammals have these instincts, since we've evolved further.

I know what you said. But you said God is real in this specific context, which as I understood hinted that the explanation for the lions' behaviour is some higher power, and not the instincts I just talked about. These two things are a bit contradictory in this situation.
