I took my own advice and read it again, and you definitely have a point! I don't think as many would understand if "blue" was used though.

Color blind people sometimes see colors as different colors. He may not be able to see blue, so he sees it as purple. The joke was actually brilliant. So to him, if 'out of the blue' was a literal statement, he'd see the blue as purple. Therefore, to him, it would be 'out of the purple'

Yes but then you'd have to take the joke from a perspective that you don't know, and having to think about the joke, though it may still be funnier to your higher thinking comrades, nullifies the joke when sharing it with a larger audience such as this website

Going with the more common phrase and making it more pun based humor, at least in my opinion, would have over all improved the joke
