Whenever I hear "I'll never use this in real life!"

You're right. But that doesn't mean that learning it is right. After graduation it's way more necessary to understand aspects of the real world then to have an enriched mind. Those classes should be extra curriculum and a 2nd thought.

But you need some of those subjects in order to graduate anyway. For example: people ask when they'll use algebra in real life, but algebra is a fundamental aspect used in physics, chemistry, biology, marketing, business and tons of other subjects!

I said you may need to use it to graduate in the first place. Most doctors don't need to use algebra but algebra is used in biostatistics, a subject they have to cover in/before medical school.

Really? I took a business class and all we did was algebra without a calculator.

yeah you need it to graduate some things. which is stupid if you never use it. don't waste kids time teaching them crap they won't use (make it an elective so they can take it if they need to). teach them things we need to know like how to do tax, how to make a good resume, how to apply for a loan etc.

Lol I'm in engineering and if you can't do algebra you are the butt of everyone's joke. But for real, there are so many things you learn in your high school math classes that show up in higher classes such as calculus and differential equations.

Um, I'm a business major and we use algebra ALL the time. If I hadn't learned algebra in high school, there's no way I would be able to get a degree. They just don't call it algebra. It's applied math.

I never said we shouldn't learn algebra, because it can be needed for various careers. But there are other subjects that should be extra. I also have the same thoughts about college. Right now I have to take a history of music lesson to get a degree in computer science. Its just not necessary

I love how everyone says "They never teach anything about Finances and Credit in school! I wish they would've taught that!" Yet I'm talking CALM 20, which teaches everything about finances...

Everything you'll do in school is different ways to make you think and open your mind to new thinking skills. Will you ever need to know algebra in life? Probably not, but the different types of thinking is what you'll need.
