It depends on how you learn them. If you keep thinking that 78 is sixty-eighteen you will have problems. But in English you don't think that 31 is three-ten-one, do you?

... I'm probably reading that wrong, but I don't understand your point. That's exactly how you have to learn French numbers. Once you get to 70 you have no choice but to think of them with addition or else you won't get the correct number. It's not that way in English but whatever, we're not learning English here
