" no, they weren't being racist towards you. Racism is about privilege blah blah blah "
okay but they fucking said I was trash for being white what the fuck else is it ?!
Certain circles on tumblr tend draw a distinction between racism and prejudice. They define prejudice as any form of discriminatory behaviour, and racism is a subtype of prejudice which is systematic and institutional.
By those definitions, a white American can experience racial prejudice, but not true racism, because there are no institutions and systems in place which specifically work against white people.
I was at the store shopping with the kid I babysit. He gets really excited when he looks in the mirror so he was just going crazy laughing & saying "Where am I?" "Here I am!". Which is incredibly cute since he is just 1 year old. This black lady started eying us really meanly & saying "Ugh kids are so damn annoying" & just a bunch of crap. 5 min later you see little black kids running around making a mess & she doesn't say anything at all. She just smiles at them. I mean wtf, is it cause we aren't black?
"Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and understanding. We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience. And that will be a day not of the white man, not of the black man. That will be the day of man as man" -MLK
I know this will be an unpopular opinion but here it goes anyways.
MLK tried very desperately to create a country where black people were treat with respect and if they worked hard like their white counterparts, they could just as successful or if not more successful in life.
Sadly, instead of being treated like equals, black people where treated as "special", and given government hand outs and exceptions. Rather than empowering black people, it taught them that they didn't have to work hard to get what they wanted: They just had to hold the past over everyone else's head, and they could get what they wanted.
It's like a rich man's kid: He never had to work hard for money or success, so he doesn't understand the value, so he abuses it.
MLK would be disappointed with black culture today. Everything he worked for has gone terribly wrong. Instead of the white America viewing blacks as our irreplaceable counter parts, they are viewed as a financial and economic plague.
(cont.) Because the black community senses this, they feel the need to defend themselves, and thus the cycle is endless.
I must put as a disclaimer: There are exceptions to every rule. It's not this way everywhere in America. There are just as many white people (and other races) that take advantage of the system. That being said, there are also much bigger and just as important problems impacting our society.
I believe everyone should work hard for their success, no matter where you come from. One day I hope to see a colorblind country, where everyone is respected in a way that doesn't abuse the system.
yeah its totally because they are taking advantage of a system and not because we forced them into the system. abosultely no way telling groups of people from childhood that they are groups of thugs and treating them that way effecting their ability to be strong earning adults and leaders. they are totes just not working cuz we taught them not to. /sarcasm
"we forced them into the system"
It's a pretty good system.
"telling groups of people from childhood that they are groups of thugs and treating them that way"
No one does this.
society does this. its not one person going "yup ya'll are hopeless thugs have a shitty life!" its just an insidious process caused by general opinions and often unconscious treatment.
you know as well as i do that googling for proof would result in about a billion hits for both sides and im not going to get into the endless argument of my-proofs-vs-your-proofs.
People need to remember that racism is something everyone deals with, regardless of where they are from and their skin tone. A lot of Americans talk about racism as though it is just an issue between white people and black people, and then they use the term "reverse racism" which doesn't even make sense.
Thank you for saying this! Im so fucking tired of people adressing this as just a white and black thing! And to be even more frank, im tired of seeing this shit constantly on Funsubstance.
The complaining posts is getting annoying. We all know racism is a serious matter, but if all you are going to is just try and point fingers I dont want to hear it. We need to focus on getting better as a people, not trying to focus on who is right and who is wrong.

A black man was being very hateful and saying horrible things about a Pakistani couple on the train. It was pointed out he was being racist and he had the nerve to say he couldn't be racist because he was black. At that point I hit him with my cane.
If you are white you do not face racism. Just because you met a person who treated you rudely it does not mean you suffered from racism. You have every right to call that person out for being rude, an asshole or even racially prejudiced but they were not racist. Until there is a day when white people are made into slaves or regarded as "less" solely for the color of their skin, white people haven't dealt with racism. Until the day we live in a world where the media implies that someone who is white is less educated, less beautiful, less successful, less deserving of higher pay or just less you have not experienced racism.
Dude, the Irish were the most popular white people for slaves, being way cheaper to purchase than black people back then. They were literally called " n-words turned inside out " and people would post thing such as " Irish need not apply " for job openings until like the fifties. Even today people are still prejudiced against red heads especially in Europe. I've literally seen people turn away children from church bathrooms because " Judas/eve was a redhead/ you're evil "
Also, white isn't just what you think of because it's in America. I'm pretty sure there are countries where white people are treated like that. The only reason white people aren't treated that way here is because the US is 77% white.
yeah im not normally one to argue the "whites have been slaves too" line, but the statement of "until white are made into slaves" statement begs for it to be brought up, everyone's been a slave at some point in history, everyone can be racist, just because people who are not white are the ones who suffer racism does not mean people cannot be racist against whites. that being said, racism as being an institutional issue is pretty straight forwardly one way, whites against everyone else, so those who try to minimize the effects of racism by pointing out that it happens to whites need to stfu.
Saying that bringing up that whites were slaves too to get rid of the " white people don't know what it was like line " just begs for racism to be acceptable as long as it's toward white people.
And having been bullied and seen people be bullied for it I will not stfu about it.
I'm so tired of white people talking about black people in any sense.... Like, you've never been black and you never will be, so why don't you stop talking about life for a black person??
How would we ever end racism if white people didn't try to understand black people and vise-versa? With that logic they may as well just keep assuming that black people are ooga-booga tribal people that aren't sophisticated past shaking their spears.
In short, your opinion is retarded.
Very. We are all human? How would 'life' be something whole different? I sometimes feel like white people are thinking more equally than black people nowadays. Consequense: all sorts of coloured people, proud of who they are, are forming groups and dividing themselves from the mass, which makes white people the only mass, and thus the "standard".
