There's a sci-fi book I read in high school that explored that theme. I can't remember what it was called but it was pretty good.
Edit: I think it was more multiple personality disorder than schizophrenia.

Tbh I feel that explanation of schizophrenia is like the one about suicidal people being homesick angels.
It makes the problem worse by trying to make it a problem we can't answer because they wanna be cute.
I completely agree with you! They are glorifying mental illness and trying to make it sound poetic and nice though it isn't. It's tough and overall not pretty.
There's actually a theory sort of like that but with birth marks
One kid actually got a random tumor in his throat
Then he told his parents about he used to be a soldier and got shot in the throat and died
Then the tumor was gone and the doctors didn't know what happened
