While (at least in the USA) this is all legally true, in the vast majority of instances it is completely unnecessary. Police are just people after all, and people respond best to cordiality and cooperation.

Unless you're the two I know, who are some of the most racist, bigoted, power tripping assholes on the face of the planet and should not have ever gotten badges. But other cops keep protecting them from punishment. The vast majority ARE good, unfortunately we have a broken system that has the good ones repeatedly protect the bad ones out of respect for the uniform. Not maliciously, but that's how bad cops stay on the force.
the problem can be unions too, i am certainly not a cop, but i see our unions going crazy to protect workers who deserve to be fired on many occasions. sometimes just reading the unions braggy newsletters about who they got jobs back for, i read the story, and its obvious what really happened, and now that person is back on the work force, continuing to give the rest of me and my already hated a coworkers a bad name.
So this is a repost, but lemme say what I said in the previous one.
If you display this card or any form of it to an officer, you're an asshole. An absolute asshole. You have the legal right to do so, but this is morally unjustifiable because you're intentionally preventing someone from doing their job (the right thing) due to your misconception that the officer will do something bad to you. Well guess what? They will. After they see this card. Ooh, traffic stop because YOU WERE SPEEDING? YOUR DAMN FAULT? Well if I was the officer, I would probably let you off with a warning. Oh, you show me this card? Well fuck you sideways, I'm gonna cite you, then cite you for noncooperation, then for not showing license, registration, and identification, then I'm gonna give you a breathalyzer (and if you don't I'll cite you for that), then I'm gonna cite you for having your phone in hand (suspected texting while driving), and I'm gonna find every single rule you've broken and beat them into you.
This is a completely unacceptable form of communication. I know that you probably know your rights, no need to rub it into my face. And you know what? I'm probably not gonna even read you your Miranda Rights because you've already shown that you know them because of your fucking card. And if you complain, I'm bringing up that card so that the entire court knows that you know and you're just being a bitch.
you know why? It's to make sure the people know their rights. If they hand me this fucking card, this shows they already know their rights. And if they get out, you bet your liver and right thumb that I'm gonna go to court over it.
I love people who feel all cops only have good intentions. My last run in with a sheriff had me guilty until proven innocent even though I was completely cooperative. Should that card be used for something as obvious as speeding? Probably not. Pulled over for no obvious reason other than being "suspected" of something, then yes.
Let me just tell you one thing @tylerchu....you just said everything and every emotion I was feeling when I saw this....very well done sir or ma'am i respect you
@asnakeinmygt
I suppose. But if you keep that on your person at all you're probably already assuming that most police encounters will be negative. I don't like to think bad things of people until I see evidence of otherwise, so seeing this as an only impression makes me thing the user is an asshole.
the thing is they do not have to read you your miranda rights, that's just for questioning, so if they don't say it they cannot hold what you say against you, it does not invalidate the arrest. plus if they DON'T arrest you then they can TOTALLY use what you say against you and apparently this is a common practice. and there are still exceptions where they can use what you say even without the warning.
@tylerchu I lost faith in our local sheriffs dept in my area a few years ago. They've made it painfully obvious to our community that they're not willing to involve themselves in anything unless they can arrest someone. Saying that I still attempt to make every encounter with LEOs positive and even engage in conversations with them when there aren't any problems going on. Carrying that card would not mean you assume every LEO is bad but it could come in handy when dealing with an asshole on a power trip.
My assumption is that the first thing you do is hand the card. And that's wrong. Agree?
But yes if they initiate the assholery, then by all means return it. I don't believe in being the better man, just don't be worse than them. Stoop to their level by all means. If they're uncommunicative, don't bother to communicate back.
Completely agree on not handing them the card first. If things start going bad or they won't anser your questions then hand them the card. I don't have one of these cards but I would definitely asses the situation before whipping it out.
