My Venus flytrap isn't very smart

Maybe the guilt of eating those flies is eating it up inside.

Maybe it's a cannibal

I used to poke them with my keys and watch them slowly shut. Needless to say it didn't live very long

if I had one I'd feed it the spiders I kill, that way I would know the spider was dead and not living in the sewers raising an army of spiders to overthrow humanity.
