You need it both ways. I've heard many stories of teachers physically abusing kids back in the day. You need a good set of teachers or else the student wont be inclined to learn.

Well, back then, parents didn't know about mean teachers, then the kids back then grew up, some of them becoming teachers that aim to be nice, and parents still think that the teachers are mean.
