That's how you sway elections, not necessarily weak minded individuals but rather middle ground voters. If you sway opinion away by drilling at the current president then it somewhat isolated the supporters making it more likely that middle ground voters will swing opposite. This has been supported by how we switch political parties for president of not every 4 then 8 years. That being said an argument against this is the fact that the US is taking a heavy liberal swing. Ever since Raegan the predominant political affiliation and beliefs tended to be conservative where there's now beginning to be a shift in this opinion.
Pretty sure the easiest way to sway elections is to court the simpleminded voter. And, of course, this seems to be the path most often taken for our politicians.
