The "coffee may be hot" warning came from when an employee got fed up with people saying the coffee was cold and so they cranked the heat up to over 200 degrees without telling anyone and a women accidentally spilled it in her lap suffering 3rd degree burns on her thighs and burns on her genitalia.
But see, even though they cranked the heat to an absurd temperature it's still bullshit that the woman even won because it's obvious that the coffee SHOULD be hot. So be fucking careful with it.
They also cranked it that high because they assumed that you would be driving before drinking it, which is really irresponsible because most people like to drink it once they get it.
And what happened with that woman was her next her was driving and they pulled over so she could put her cream and sugar in and it spilled as she opened it and was too hot.
And McDonalds only wanted to give her $800 in payment but her medical bills were $10k and there had already been numerous other cases like that and they did nothing about their coffee temperatures.
The lawsuit against McDonald's was because they cranked up the warming burners on their coffee extra hot, because customers would complain that they had gotten a coffee to go but it was cold when they went to drink it. McD's served the coffee in a foam cup. The customer who sued did so because the coffee was so hot that the foam cup wasn't structurally sound enough to hold iot. That is, the hot hot coffee caused the foam to be too weak, and the scalding coffee spilled in her lap and gave her second and third degree burns. So, this wasn't indicative of Americans being lawsuit happy or being so stupid that they don't know that coffee is hot. It was because McD's served something in a conatiner unsafe to hold it.
This information was in a lot of newspapers, so I don't know where some of you got these bizarre misinformed ideas...I guess that's the downside to getting your news from comedy shows and memes.
Most of this is true, except the famous McDonalds lawsuit actually happened while her nephew was driving her. After they got their stuff, they pulled over so she could add her coffee and cream. When she tried to open it it spilled over onto her lap and then gave her those burns.
