Actually the current English accent was always the high-class English accent, which was shared by most high class colonists in early US history. As the upper class lost power and influence in England their accent spread to the lower classes and became the common accent, while in the US living in a very different land in very different ways slowly changed their accent to the various accents found in the US today.
