Funny enough, as I was taking law and psychology we had a couple of experts teach (a whole unit) about lying. What you can actually get about lying is that it is nearly impossible to detect (even by experts and technology) in a reliable way, as well as people desperately telling the truth will also have the same symptoms as someone desperately lying. On top of it all, we lie by nature as a way to keep mentally healthy on many of the realities out there, lying is in our instinctive nature (more often lying to ourselves) thus why it is so hard to detect.
