They're not redundant, they're retro rockets that slows the descent in the final stage. It's how the Soyuz capsules land.

I meant they are expelling right over the cabin. Unless you made the top of the cabin like nose cone of the space shuttle, burning to death is gonna be an issue. Still tho, looks like one hell of a ride flying out the back of the plane lol.
My concerns is more the safety of the people inside. Would they be safe in a jettisoned cabin? What exactly presents whiplash? And would the pilots and stewards/sterwardesses be able to get in and into seats safely before it gets jettisoned?
