Well, diamonds are the hardest mineral you'll find (toughness is another matter entirely). It's kinda sturdy, though if you hit it hard enough with something really heavy, it'll shatter into tiny pieces. The good thing about them it's that they are good insulators, so you "can" wear it and not compromise the stone... or worry the stone will carry electric current to.. dunno, somewhere. Their thermal conductivity is even better than copper, so there's that.
Their appeal is their "shine", but there are plenty other minerals that form really beautiful forms and colors too; fluorite and opal come to mind in that one, and the prettiest blue mineral to me it's probably glaucophane.
But it's all matter of perspective, if you like diamonds, then you like diamonds. It's as simple as that.
