ET was trying to ask the kid dressed as yoda for help. He kept saying phone home to him. So he knew that yoda's species knows his. He was hoping that he help him get home.

The kid is dressed as Yoda bc within the E.T. canon, Star Wars is a movie. The appearance of the E.T. race within Star Wars is just a nod to Spielberg.
