The actual tables + blankets/futons + dip in floor to fit feet/legs under table is quite common in Japan during the winter. It's called a "kotatsu", and usually has a heater underneath the futon, keeping the entire thing warm. I don't think I've ever seen it with a couch-like layout around it, but hey, that sounds like an amazing combo.

1 of 2 things would happen. I would hit my legs on it multiple times or I'd knock over everything on the table. Probably both.

we had this when we stayed in Japan it was ridiculously good. the little heater under the tables and the big doonas...snuggle heaven.
