But isn't it contradictory to what you believe in? Or rather, don't believe in? I mean this holiday celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, a God to the Christians and a prophet to the Muslims. And yet all over the world atheists will badmouth God and religion and celebrate Christmas and Easter. Double standards much?
Okay. I meant no offence against you, the atheists I meet are usually very mean and not very understanding. Hope you have a merry Christmas, enjoy your holidays :)
Well, technically Jesus was born around September or June ( I've heard both ) and the only reason it's the day it is is because the church was trying to compete with Pagans who celebrated the winter solstice.
Nowadays Christmas is more of a commercial holiday than a religious one.
I'm way late cause I just got off work but I'll add something. Imagine your son is nonreligious, but most of your family is Christian or celebrate Christmas. Would it not be the brattiest thing ever for your son to not just fucking humor the family and participate? Give and receive gifts, eat cookies and shit. It's not about believing, it's about not being a total dick to your family.
i celebrate Christmas as an American tradition, most major holidays have roots in multiple religions and its ok to celebrate some form of them simply as a holiday to celebrate family and whatever core notion is celebrated that holiday. While ostensibly Christmas is about the birth of Christ, it is also about giving and family and spreading cheer and joy throughout, and the fact is the exact manner of celebration tends to vary by nation making each version more about traditions. its like so many holidays involve things no adult actually believes in and old stories and myths, why do you need to believe in the religion the holiday is currently named after? my celebration varies a bit since i don't have any Jesus or manger stuff, but to me the best part is going to my friends house and watching her kids rip open presents, which means a large part of the meaning of the holiday is right there, religion free.
