Counterfeits find their way around and if they don't check and it turns out to be counterfeit they are the one in trouble. So get the fuck over it and let them do their job. If you don't like it don't carry big bills.
Yep if you (or any cashier anywhere for that matter) don't check them and they get a counterfeit bill, their till is technically short that amount and they are subject to discipline just the same as if they took that bill out and pocketed it. I have worked retail before and it does happen.
I check all bills but the smallest ones at work, we have to. I usually explain that it's because of the customers safety as well. I don suspect any person in particular, more that they might accidentally carry counterfeits. We get counterfeits more often than people understand. (But now we have new bills, starting in October so it will be less)
many counterfeiters will actually go to spend money in cheap places where they think it will be taken without being checked just for the change (in real money)
When I worked at staples we had to check $20s and above. We had a lot of questionable bills come through the store. Especially with all the higher priced items we had. Always got strange looks, but I simply told them this is how I keep my job lol. Deal with it or leave
As a former McDonald's Manager I can assure you that the Secret Service(the US Department that deals with counterfeit money) watches all deposits by fast food franchises.
I was one as well. We had a few 20's and 10's come through. It was most prevalent around this time of year. Unfortunately we didn't usually catch them until they got to the bank.
I worked in banking for years, and 95% of the counterfeit money that we sent off came through from fast food restaurants. They typically order a small thing during a bust time and get the majority back in change.
I hate when I'm checking a bill that is required by my job to check and people make the "I just made it today" joke and get offended. Sorry but I absolutely have to check them.
I always feel like the customer is judging me when I check the bills. I wish there was a subtle way to do it, like a light on my side of the counter, but NO, they make me hold it up above my head right in front of the customer.
My dad got a fake bill out of an atm one time. They're required to check, because they have no way of knowing you're not carrying one around accidentally. Grow up.
