To preserve the bricks underneath. Post Alley was a landmark way before the Gum Wall.

As a Washingtonian I am so upset about this. It's a huge reason why Seattle gets tourists and no its gone forever.

It'll start up again. They're just cleaning it so it doesn't destroy the 100+ year old bricks underneath.
