No one is pretending. Being an adult simply means responsibility. You take on responsibilities, you take responsibility for your actions. you do the right thing. Adulthood isn't the amassing of knowledge - having everything figured out. It's simply not being a whiny, it's not fair, it's not my fault, someone hold my hand, do it for me, I'm shiny and unique, idiot.
