A car is actually a fairly safe place to get struck by lighting. The chassis conducts the lighting around the car and away from the passengers.

When I lived in Indiana, they said it was safer to be in a moving car during a lightning storm than it was sitting in your house.

I'd believe it. This person had some bad luck in that their tire blew. But usually nothing too bad happens. I read an article one time about this lady in her car when it was struck by lightning and all that happened was her radio turned off.

I remember learning as a kid that the tires ground the car. But I had a public education, so not sure if that's really true or not.
