Sometimes if I'm really uncomfortable I'll put my hand in my pocket with my knife just in case.

I'm hyper alert about where the kids are and holding their hands so they don't get distracted and wander off or get snatched even though that last one isn't very probable.
theres an analogy to electrons that my friend drew to losing kids that's absolutely hilarious and I'll try to remember to type it when I get back on laptop

Yes please do as long as it's not too negative... ;D
First we have to understand the concept of valence electrons. Basically they're the outer shell of electrons in an atom and those are used for bonding. The more shells (bigger the atom), the farther away the electrons are and the easier it is to lose/bond with something. The less electrons in the valence, the easier it is to lose them.

Kids are like valence electrons and parents are like the nucleus. The farther away a kid is from their parent, the easier it is to steal them. The more kids are away from their parents, the more likely they'll play and look out for each other. If the kids are lonely, it's easier to steal them.
Develop a system with your kids, don't be a helicopter parent. Please, for their success

I'm not. They enjoy a fair bit of independence. They're just little and easily distracted. It's only in really crowded areas and parking lots I make them hold my hand. Otherwise I'm fine with a bit of space if they want it.
Unfortunately I spent a decent proportion of my younger teenage years being one of those asshole kids that steal things (of which I deeply regret and feel awful about), as long as your valuables aren't somewhere obviously easy to take and you don't look significantly more well off than others around you, your stuff isn't about to be taken. There's easier targets than you.

But there are professionals that can steal just about anything off of you while talking t ok you and making eye contact. Wouldn't be hard to steal a lot of pepoles stuff in a crowd and then the chances of getting a significant amount of goods is high
Not worth stealing unless you know for sure they've got something of value. You only get a certain amount of steals before cops are warned that lots of people are missing stuff from that area (say 2 hours at most), so most people go for the easy steals or, if they're feeling lucky, the guy that looks like he's got a lot of cash in his wallet.
