I'm sure human rights people will say it's a cruel and unusual punishment.

Can it be considered a punishment if the person deliberately brought explosives? It would be like walking into a lab with a high-powered magnet, and despite the warnings still wear metal body piercing, which would then be ripped off... then calling that an unusual and cruel punishment. Just my opinion though.

what if it's a really bad bomb though? It's not like some bombs just go 'poof'

Even if this WERE true, two terrorists would team up: One with the bomb and one with the detonator, and they'd put the thing together after security.

I don't think the Xray machines are simply there to detect bombs though.

a terrorist could just slip bombs into people's pockets and kill many unsuspected. also, everyone is constitutionally guaranteed the right to a fair trial, which if they were dead, they couldn't get. and how would this technology even work, with the wide range of bombs and explosives that exist in the world? it fails to account for other weapons such as knives, etc. too.
