I was told that the only reason Hanukkah is so hyped is because of how close it is to Christmas...? I don't know if that's true or not.

I think that's true. I was told Hanukkah is really a very minor holiday that is ramped up so Jewish kids who don't do secular Christmas can celebrate.

We work during Hanukkah because we are allowed to work. There is no law preventing us from working. It's not like Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah or Shabbos. But we are celebrating Christmas in the traditional Jewish way. Chinese food and a movie. (Krampus)

Depending on the form of Christianity you follow, I'm agnostic so don't follow any, but many people don't celebrate the 12 days anymore and just stick to celebrating Christmas Day.
