You don't pick up a lightsaber and suddenly fight off a trained practitioner. It's like me going up against a brown belt TKD fighter and winning. I have negative zero training besides youtube videos and I can suddenly hold my ground.
Hell, you don't even pick up a lightsaber and wield it without slicing off your leg. It's not a sword. It's a long gyroscope.
You don't kill a badass character like that. You have him fly through a star destroyer's bridge or something. Wimpy death for an awesome guy.
The fate of the Rebellion and the Republic hang in the balance and all you could scrape up is a dozen X-wings and the Falcon? Against a goddamn planet? Couldn't you have at least found a few Mon Calamari Cruisers?
Speaking of which, who the fuck is the Republic? It seems like they're referring to a government body similar to the one ep 1-3. In any case, the only reason you brought that up was to have another excuse to fight. We're not just fighting for our survival against a planet-weapon now, we're fighting for the survival of the REPUBLIC, whom we don't know who or what they are except that they seem to be on our side.
And why didn't the Republic send any help? Sure you only had a few hours to scramble fighters but you'd think that there would be some auxiliary ships out somewhere near you. It's the base of the goddamn rebellion for fucks sake.
I'd check out the books that cover the stuff referring to the formation of the republic. And I do have a few issues with the film. It hangs on to closely to the other films, namely, a new hope. And it really felt that for the most part, Abrams was playing it way too safe for the film. It was like either Disney or him were too afraid to take a fresh step away.
And who the fuck is the dark trooper? Dark troopers were supposed to be badass and this one went down with a sneeze and a half. And even if we had no background on dark troopers, there was one in the entire movie. One trooper that stands out and is obviously in a position of authority and power. And probably got that way for being cunning and/or badass. But what do you do with this unique character that should have played the role of the Remnant's Spearhead? You throw her in the garbage compactor for the sake of an old joke. I saw that character and immediately expected her to do something amazing but nope there she goes away to be squished by a kraken.
And regarding the books, they do exist to give background but there should be a very basic explanation as to who the Republic is in the movie.
But the Republic was just kind of...there. They played no part except to give the Rebellion someone to protect, as if it wasn't enough to protect themselves and a bunch of other planets. They were completely unexplained and it made me disappointed.

Oh, and they also threw out all the old canon. The books don't mean shit now.
And when Finn's fighting that other Storm Trooper with the electric stick thing, the light saber should have gone right through the stick and through the guy, not had an epic duel. Light sabers only can be stopped by other light sabers, I thought
He did a bad part of introducing Finn. I mean come on, if he's a stormtrooper who actually has emotions then how come there aren't others like him? How come there weren't other stormtroopers who decided that they didn't want to be bad and wanted to retaliate with Finn? I think if they'd introduced him in a better way then that would've been 1 less thing he didn't do right (the other being the fact that he fought with a lightsaber which only jedis are supposed to use). Like come on, what makes him so special to be the only one out of thousands of stormtroopers to actually say "no, I won't kill for the bad guy".
