Lol, this is 100% marketing :). The technology in Tesla is not secret. Patients are available to anyone with google. The illegality happens when someone uses the pattents to make money. Tesla says they wont go after anyone who "in good faith" uses the technology. Its a briliant marketing campaign that makes many people feel good about the company (which is what good marketing is supposed to do) but its still marketing.
