Nowadays, virtually everything in engineering is made using CAD.

But... What about the bits that were lost when it was cut? How is there no gap whatsoever?

i've worked with a laser cutter and plasma cutter (which similar but for metal) and there is always a 1/8" to 1/4" gap cut out. so this was definitely made with two pieces.
