Yeah, they were. The ancient pharaohs used them as their butial tombs. Unfortunately they were mostly pillaged by grave robbers in antiquity due to their tendency to bury said pharaohs with massive amounts of treasure. They would even bury slaves (who were alive) with the dead god kings to serve them in the after life.

In Mexican graveyards the richest people get little buildings built around their graves with one to four glass walls. Inside there'll be pictures of them, fake flowers, Personal belongings, etc.
