Just a bit of trivia: The 'becks' were filled with perfumes and potpourri since the smell of death from the Black Plaque was so overwhelming. These doctors also walked with canes to push people away from them to avoid infection.

Also, fun fact: the plague was believed to be caused by the foul smell so it was not only more pleasant but also less deadly to smell only nice things in their minds.

More fun facts, this is how the legend that garlic kept bad spirits that caused illness away. Garlic growers/vendors were a bit healthier (garlic is a natural antibiotic) & so they survived the plague better. People thot it was the garlic stench as they would vend it by wearing it in strands around their neck.
