It's because the Italian word for "90" has absolutely no relevance to the Italian word for "55" and they just wanted to screw over Italian tourists. Trust me, guys, I'm an expert

It was originally estimated to be 90 miles long. When it was accurately measured it was found to be only 55 miles long, but the original name stuck.
