There is a threshold at which the food doesn't get any better. The food/preparation simply isn't worth that and you are paying for things like name recognition, the experience and the location.

If it's one of many courses in a fancy $200 menu, served at a very fancy place, served by very fancy staff, in a very fancy atmosphere, why not? If its a piece of fish on half a handful of vegies for $200, its a rip off, and anyone paying this would be an idiot and the place might be shut down.

So it doesn't matter how overpriced the food is, as long as everything is fancy?

That's not a $300 dish. that looks like something I'd get at a wedding. The lack of knowledge about why certain restaurants are more expensive than others is amazing.

There's a difference between good cheap food and dumpster diving.
