That woman is actually lucky her son didn't accidentally kill her or himself. I support your right to own a gun, but I believe in gun control. You should need a licence, like a car licence. More importantly, keep your guns away from children.
Driving a car is not an enumerated right guaranteed by the United States Constitution.
But most states do require training and proof of proficiency and DO issue a license to carry a firearm. No state, and no common sense, allows you to just toss a loaded gun in your backseat with your child.
No amount of training, licensing, or "gun control" legislation can prevent stupidity. For that we need to revisit the eugenics movement.
Gun laws will not prevent all gun related violence and death, but I don't understand the "all or nothing" argument. Because adding (or really just enforcing already existing) regulations won't prevent all deaths, its not worth stopping some deaths?
That being said, this woman would have been well within her rights, even with tighter regulations, to own a gun. You're right. You can't stop stupid.
And why the hell would you have it loaded in the back seat? That's not going to help you in the event you get car jacked. It should be within arms reach of you with the clip out. If the clip was in then why was it cocked with a bullet in the chamber? I'm assuming it wasn't a revolver. I don't think you can fix this kind if stupid.
I saw a tally awhile back that said we currently have, counting federal, state, and local laws, something like 10,000 gun laws.
Those of you who think we need "control", just what law(s) would you suggest that would prevent such an occurrence?
What an idiot to leave her gun on the back seat of the car. Handguns belong in cases, or holsters, and never where young children can easily get to them. Not to mention if storing a gun properly there wouldn't be a round chambered, and a four year-old couldn't rack the slide on a semi-auto, or probably cock a revolver.
They were driving to pick up a new horse. The trooper who pulled over to help said the kid was in the backseat, out of the car seat. So she either didn't put him in it, or didn't put him in right. He found the .45 shoved under the seat, which is where you put a gun with a child in the car when you clearly haven't been taught a firearm deserves respect and isn't just a fun toy that goes bang and gets waved around in Facebook pictures.
