I work at an animal shelter, and every now and then a parent will come in, and without them saying anything, we all know what they're going to do with the dog they have on the leash. Everytime we hear "He got too big" or "We didn't know she required so much maintenance" all the workers die a little on the inside, because this isn't the first time we've heard that and it won't be the last. Most times, the dog is still wagging it's tail even as you walk out the door. Sometimes, they cry when you leave, and don't stop until long after you're gone. The worst, I think, is when we find dogs on the side of the road with collars on but no one comes to get them. When that happens and my shift ends, I hug my own dog a little tighter, and try not to think about the ones I left at the shelter who're never going to get a hug again.
A dog is not something to be bought lightly. It's a life, same as yours, and worth much more than to just be disregarded
That's unfortunately true. When dogs get dropped off we have to fight to get them to eat something, they get so depressed. A while ago we had to put down a dog named Dennis cause he wasn't taking care of himself and developed some serious medical issues. Please, don't buy an animal as a gift if you're not ready for the commitment.
When we are down to two dogs, my husband and I go to animal shelter websites, find the oldest dog there and adopt. We just adopted a 10 year old yellow lab who is still skin and bones. She is incontinent and I'm thinking the previous owners dropped her off at the side of the road. She's very well behaved and very well trained. Who knows how long she was on the streets, but she was in the shelter over a month. The shelter workers said not a single person stopped to look at her. We are in the process of getting the incontinence take care of. We think she was gotten rid of because she was too old.
This hits me right in the heart considering my family and I just adopted this adorable pit named Tank. He had a home for 8 whole years before they decided he was too old. Tank is the sweetest, funniest, most well behaved dog I've ever met. It's insane that anyone would ever give him up. Every time I think about it, it makes me wanna cry because I can't imagine our home without him and I don't understand how someone could be so heartless and just toss him out.
I'm a little late in commenting, but this post reminded me of something somewhat relevant. People who get their kids bunnies and chicks for Easter. I understand that chicks and bunnies are "festive" but pets aren't meant to be "festive". Often people buy chicks and bunnies for Easter without having the proper living space for the animals once they are grown. The animals didn't disappear with the holiday cheer and end up being neglected. Just like many places won't let people adopt black cats around Halloween, chicks and bunnies shouldn't be sold around Easter.
