There's a difference between being yourself and actively throwing yourself against all of society's norms and niceties out of spite/desire to be different.

Yes I agree, but to a certain extent. Some people may be different and keep to themselves or do things they want in small to moderate ways. However, some people are actually the type to 'throw' themselves into doing things that isn't considered the norm to society.
U know how we used to have some loud kids in our class that would misbehave and always seem to go against the rules? And there would be others that would act that way just to get noticed? That is a difference. Joan Jett from beginning was different and was also the type to push the boundaries herself. She wanted to be a rock star and never gave up, but she was also outgoing and stubborn. She wanted it for herself, and at the same time change the populations's perspective on women and certain music types.
She was being herself. Same time she was also pushing for a change.
