They have such a stressful job and I don't think society gives them enough credit for the good things they accomplish. Everyone keeps focusing on the bad cops and its making it look like all law enforcement is corrupted
To the gutless anonymous guest: There are not a lot of bad cops all over the country. Certainly there are a few, just like there are a few bad nurses or a few bad taxi drivers, but I don't hear anyone bitching about them!
What there are are criminals with absolutely no respect for the law who give police officers no choice but to use force.
Even if we say that every claim of excessive force that gets reported is true, how many can you count in the last year? Two years? Ten years? Can you even understand how many thousands of police/citizen interactions there are every single day in this country, and how infinitesimally small a percentage those claims actually are?
Next time you or someone you care about has an emergency I assume you will not dial 911 because there are soooo many bad cops out there you'll probably be shot or something!
THANK YOU! It's so frustrating sitting and listening to someone talk about how corrupted police are when they don't even understand what their job is like. I'm a criminal justice major currently taking a police studies class and honestly there is so much more to that job than the average American believes.

I don't understand the hate that a majority of cops receive.
I mean there are some bad ones but you can't judge all of them based on some bad actions. It's not fair at all.
People I know hate on cops for the reasons that:
"They get fined or their licence is suspended, "Well don't drive recklessly then
"Got thrown into jail for doing drugs, " Then don't do drugs
"I have to do community service because I stole some stuff," Don't steal then
"Stupid cops" "Effin pigs" "I hope they all die"
^ I've heard all this hate on cops from people that I know and it's just ridiculous.
I am thankful for the service they provide, most of them are great people.
That's not really correct. There isn't an actual government funded database that actively keeps track of police-caused fatalities. However, there are organizations attempting to keep track of these fatalities by collecting information in the media and in public records. Currently, many of those organizations would claim that overwhelmingly black males are more often shot and killed by police than white males.
Not only is that statement incorrect and whites are far more likely to get shot by police than any minority, black officers are far more likely to shoot (regardless of the subject's skin color) than white officers. There have been a number of empirical studies in addition to mounds of anecdotal evidence that shows this.
REALLY!? Michael Brown was a thug who attempted to murder a police officer with his own gun! He fought Darren Wilson to the last. Four of those shots were to his arm, would that really have stopped him attacking Wilson? Two were to his head, and the rest were indeterminate. Officer Wilson was fighting for his life and had to stop the aggression.

You shoot until the threat is neutralized.
This may be a surprise to you, but unless the bullets hit your reptilian brain or your heart, you ain't gonna immediately die or stop.
Also, you shoot when you feel your life is in danger, you don't wait for the 200 pound wall of a man to curbstomp/disarm you first.
Not to mention that police have to act as if anyone they encounter is potentially armed because they truly don't know if they are. They can't afford to take the risk and assume someone doesn't have a gun on them and them bam they're dead on the ground.
Bingo. I do not recall who conducted the study and I sure as hell wish I could, but a few years ago several pastors, community organisers, etc (the people complaining about all this police brutality) were given an opportunity to experience police weapons training in which they were placed in scenarios in front of a video screen which required them to use force to defend themselves. Every one of them emptied their guns.
You cannot properly judge an officer when you have no clue what he or she was dealing with.
I was able to see local police officers do some of those weapons training scenarios in front of a giant video screen. They're extremely realistic to the point the same scenario has about 10 different possible endings and even though the gun is unloaded, it still gives the kick. I was able to shoot the unloaded gun for a target practice kind of scenario. We just had to hit bullseyes. Of course I was awful but it's been really cool being able to see police work up close.
