It's implied heavily that he created each and every one of them, until the Minions movie retconned it.

How does he even figure out the names? Can they say each other's name? If so, I didnt hear them say it in the Despicable Me movies. And they had names before Gru, so he didn't name them so....?? Can someone explain?

The Minions movie retconned a few things out. Apparently, the creators mentioned that Gru actually created the minions from genetically modified corn, but now it's no longer canon, and whatever source existed seems to have evaporated into thin air. There was also a schematic in the girls' room which showed a schematic of a minion, but I can't find any pictures of it. Regardless, they were intended to be artificial beings, until they saw it profitable to create a new canon.
