This one is actually a French word, and in French it's spelled just as it's pronounced.

For me it's the same when you pronounce Sean. Why on earth is it not pronounced like Dean but like shauwn?!

'Cos "Sean" is of Irish origin, and "Dean" is of Greek origin. Try Saoirse, Siobhan, Cathal, Aoife if you find "Sean" silly.

Speaking of the name Sean... I am mildly dissapointed that Sean Bean isn't pronounced like Seen Bean.
