I know I'm late here but I just wanted to say I'll always remember the look of horror that spread on that Russian kid's face when I told her how to pronounce "oeillet". (Basically the o, two Ls and t are silent. Also o and e are "glued" to each other, not really separate letters.)
We also have queer words that can be both masculine and feminine and the ones that give in to peer pressure and become feminine only in their plural form.
Also, é, è, ê, ai are the same sound but slightly different. If that makes you feel any better I'm French and 20 and I still don't mark the difference in certain words.
Bon courage!
yes for the e's but they sound alike a lot (thus the "slightly different" but it's hard to explain ^^) And for the oe it's true that it's technically e dans l'o but in everyday life I've always called it "e collé"! I guess it's like the chinese hats/accents circonflexes.
And no i sounds like ah in french

Also the glued letter is called e dans l'o : œ.
