My mom's a teacher and teachers are often times supposed to teach you a specific way as part of their required curriculum

Yeah. You often have to show the method you used to get to the answer as well, and if it's not in the mark scheme, you'll either get the marks, or the examiner will piss off everyone by being the equivalent of that kid in class that's like "Does it count if-"
