I read awhile back that someone went through audio recordings of her for the last 500 years and found that the Queen's English has changed over the years. If even 'ol Liz speaks differently what exactly are we supposed to accept as "proper" English?
You're on the right track guestwho. American English today stems from rhotic English. During colonial times both England and the US spoke closer to what is today American English. Over time the two englishes diverged while American English still holds more of a base in the old form British English holds less.
