But... They were already engaged? So either he asked her to marry him or she asked him and he said yes. Which both is a proof of love to my eyes. So if he doesn't want to marry her, why were they even engaged in the first place?

Maybe they got engaged and then he was having doubts and he was looking for a way out and she knew it so she decided to lock him in before it was to late

easier said than done, saying no in front of tons of people, making her cry, disappointing the crowd, its a lot to bare.
