Honey, it's herd is probably dead. They can't even keep Elephants and Rhinos safe in National Preserves anymore. As much as I wish it were otherwise, those is decent Zoos are far better off. Roadside zoos and circuses are another matter entirely. At least for now, the best thing we can do is try to build their numbers in captivity so they are no longer on the brink of extinction.
.
And someone go snuggle that baby.
I work at a zoo and I can say it is very important for animals to be in human care. However it is illegal in the US for an elephant to be kept alone and frowned upon by most zoological facilities. We try to stop keeping animals like this but don't judge ALL zoos badly.
We could be seeing this photo out of context. She may have lost her family or she may have been rejected by her family. "The wild" is an unforgiving place. I work for a rescue program. We take in sad cases that would not survive if released.
You're anthropomorphizing. Elephants can't cry. Also it's illegal in the US to keep an elephant alone so I'm betting that this photo is out of context. Also elephants do not have facial expressions. Their mental state can be monitored by behavior, diet, and socialization. None ofwhich we can see with just a photo
Actually elephants have been shown to hold memorials for other elephants and humans.
when a child sees its parent being killed for its tusks, it can become as mentally unstable as you and I.
oh yes I know. elephants are one of the most intelligent and social animals on earth. however, even if all the evidence suggests that an animal is "happy" or "sad" there is no way to prove it. trust me, I believe with certainty that they do, but we shouldn't place our beliefs and thoughts on them because it makes us feel better.
He's an unpopular opinion. Just let extinction happen. They can't adapt to the world that we are creating and there for "according to how nature has worked in the past before us" there time on this planet is up.....and now I wait for all the hate...hey that rymd
And I agree, with one little addition. Don't let them go extinct for unnescessary reasons. Tigers for example are perfectly adapted to their environment but humans actively hunt them to extinction. Now pandabears for example are going extinct partly because of their environment to live in becoming smaller, but mostly because those idiots can only mate once in every three years or so, and even then pregnancy goes wrong a lot of the time.
There is a reason "let extinction happen" is an unpopular opinion.
1. Humans have destroyed the natural order where extinction kept us in balance. Now the rate of extinction increases exponentially each decade.
2. As most grade school kids know, it's really not a food chain, it's a food web. Species are all connected. So when you lose too many, the ecosystem breaks down. With it go the trees and the quality of the water supply.
3. As we lose species diversity, we will lose new cures for disease. Humans find treatments in the unique properties of plans and animals all over the globe.
4. If humans manage to survive in a world with shrinking species diversity, we will be left with pigeons and rats and squirrels.

that's how people get to them.
