Probably because my uni area has local chavs so everyone speaks more common. (I speak common cos I am common (Londoner) but I try speaking with more RP)

Kindly explain to us Americans what RP means please... I've heard this term before but it wasn't appropriate to ask at the time, so I am curious.

Received Pronunciation - the standard form of British English pronunciation, based on educated speech in southern England, widely accepted as a standard elsewhere. Think of the way The Royal Family speaks.
