Okay, unpopular statement that will undoubtedly be downvoted, but please read to the end: I know one girl who was choked hard enough by an SO to leave really dark bruising on her neck, and another who had to literally jump a guy from behind and punch him repeatedly in the head to get his hands off the neck of her friend. Whether you believe we need feminism or not is whatever, but there are a LOT of people out there who have been attacked (female AND male) in this way. There's a good chance you know one, even if they haven't told you. Everyone on Funsubstance loves superhero movies, we all know the context behind these images is Apocalypse being an asshole, but here's the thing Fox is taking into consideration: not everyone knows. There are HUGE demographics who have no idea who the X-Men are. TONS of people who have no clue who Mystique or Apocalypse are. All they see is a giant billboard with somebody being choked, and violently. That's the complaint. If they had shown a full view of
Apocalypse standing on a pile of fallen heroes choking Mystique, there wouldn't be anywhere near as much uproar, because there'd be context. "Oh look, this is a huge fight, this guy's some kind of badass whose murderizing everybody." I think that would have gone over a lot better.
And murder and blowing cities to shit is fine?
Alright I know what's next on my to-do list. Homemade explosives can't be that hard to make right?
Jeezus fuck.
I understand where you are coming from @dancadamorte, but scenes like that have been in movies for YEARS. why is everyone suddenly enraged about choke scenes? I coukd be wrong, but I think Doc Oct help Spiderman (Toby) in a choke hold with his tentacle and no one batted an eye
The scenes have always been in movies, and are fine in movies. Because while you're watching the movie you have context and know what's going on. The big blowup is over the billboard with no context. You'll find a lot of movies avoid putting certain scenes on billboards for that reason. You don't generally see pictures of the smoking twin towers, of dead and bloody murder victims on billboards, because studios don't want to shove sensitive imagery into people's faces with no context. It's done more subtly. There's no context on this one that this is a battle. If you don't know X-Men, you could also assume this is a weird looking dude choking his weird looking wife. Fox apologized because they slipped up and didn't realize the movie title wasn't enough context for this particular image.

I get what you mean @dancadamorte but...seriously? In Deadpool the strong chick strangles the shit out of the big metal dude and no one gave a fuck but Mystique is put in a choke hold and everyone goes fucking nuts! If Wolverine was doing this to Magneto, no one would care. If Storm was doing this to Jean Grey no one would care. If Rogue did it to Gambit no one would care! But Mystique gets picked up by her neck and EVERYONE LOSES THEIR SHIT!!! It's a double standard. So much for equality! Men can be victims of DV just as much as women can (and it's rising more each year)! What the fuck did we (women) campaign for all these years just to fall back on our "feminine fragility". Fuck that shit.
People who get offended by this kind of crap need to grow a set as well as a spine, stop acting like sensitive little snowflakes and fucking suck it UP!!!!
I think you all are getting confused. I said the scenes are fine...in the movie. @peachypersimmon I don't think any of the scenes you mentioned were plastered as standalone images on a billboard with no explanation. THAT'S what upset so many people. Mystique wears no visible armor, carries no visible weapon, and is being held up by her neck by a guy who's visibly protected by what he's wearing. She's not portrayed as a soldier in a fight. As for DV, the correct answer is "maybe we should be a little more sensitive to all survivors" not "fuck all DV survivors equally, it doesn't bother me personally so they should all grow a pair."

They most likely didn't even think about that as they were making the scene. Mystique never wears armor and everyone else usually does. So that's not really a valid point. Also, if real life DV survivors have a problem, then they can avoid the movie. Mystique is a VERY POWERFUL mutant and everyone is vulnerable to something. A choke hold isn't a big deal on that sense because I'm sure in a few seconds, she'd whoop his ass 5 ways to sundown
Again, the issue isn't the MOVIE. That's why so many of you are mad, you're not listening to what the complaint actually was and are just relying on memes. Nobody cares if she gets choked in the movie. NOBODY CARES. She can get choked for 20 minutes IN THE MOVIE. The literal complaint raised was "there isn't context for that image in the actual billboard itself." Plenty of people will CHOOSE not to see the movie, but the billboard gives them NO CHOICE in the imagery. That's it. Nobody wants them to change the movie, or all the billboards. Just the CONTEXT of that billboard. Go read the actual complaints.

But does there really need to be context? Even if you aren't familiar with the franchise, the majority of the public would look at that and think "some serious shit is going down right now."
A lot of people unfamiliar with the franchise looked at it and thought "some serious shit is going down right now." The problem was that the "serious shit" that came to mind for many people wasn't "epic battle between two soldiers," it was "that villain's choking the hell out of an unarmed lady." Historically, Mystique kicks 50 shades of ass without needing all that and isn't somebody you turn your back on from 5 miles away, but me and you know that. We get it right away, so it's hard to see why other people wouldn't. For a lot of people it was just two unknown mutants with nothing to tell them Mystique was his opponent and not his victim.

Ah, ok. I see your point. With that in mind, I think you're right. Sorry for being an ass
You weren't an ass. There's a vocal minority of "feminists" out there who think they're owed superior treatment instead of equality because previous generations were oppressed, and they attack EVERYTHING. It's easy to get defensive about something you love when it looks like they're the ones attacking, I get the same way. I was rolling my eyes about this issue too until I read the details.
using that as a promo image was a bad idea though. doesnt make me want to watch the movie. i mean who looks at a picture of mystique being choked and go "oh looks like fun. lets go watch." seriously.
Next they'll make Mystique a support character who never fights in order to make sure you feminists don't get triggered. Then you'll get triggered and complain that she isn't joining the fight like the male superheroes. Then she'll join the fight in the next movie and inevitably get hurt, then the feminists will get triggered because a woman got hurt. Fuck you, feminists.
oH My GoD people, it's a picture of a fight! What are they saying, that people are not allowed to get hurt in movies? It's not gender equality if a woman gets strangled in a movie, but with a man it would be equal? That's the reason gender equality exists in the first place. Girls are just as badass as boys.
But this image, which is taken out of context from the movie, doesn't show a woman being a badass. This just perpetuates the power men have over women, especially in domestic abuse situations. It was a poor promo choice, especially when male superheroes get overly heroic posters. Doesn't that make sense? Women are already underrepresented as superheroes, why not show her as conquering the fight like a true badass?
Hm... That actually makes sense. But wouldn't that show that she won? They want the people who watch it to feel for her in the fight... And it's not always that male superheroes get overly heroic posters, sometimes they too get pictures of them in vulnerable situations. As in one of the Superman movies (Don't know which one) theres a promo picture of him getting weakened by kryptonite, right? And I love female superheroes! Wonder Woman, Rogue, Storm... They're cool as hell. They really should come up with more female superheroes! And I don't think that they thought that it would be interpreted as a man having control of a woman, since this is a superhero-movie. I don't interpret it like that, more like that she will kick that son of a bitch in the face seconds after. But yes, they probably should have chose another picture for promotion. They usually just show the heroes doing cool poses, not getting almost-killed (or killed?) by villains, and to be honest I like that better.
Honestly, disregarding feminism and apologies and all of that, it just seems kind of strange to have that particular picture used as a promotional poster. It's just not the sort of thing movies usually use for advertising. If I saw that on the street I'd probably find it odd.
Oh yea cuz when a guy is getting choked to death he feels happiness instead of fear right. If you're gonna be triggered by a blue mutant being choked by another blue mutant you should lock yourself in your basement and never come out.
Alright I know what's next on my to-do list. Homemade explosives can't be that hard to make right?
